Welcome to the Athletic Training page at SUNYIT. This site is to
provide athletes, parents, and visiting teams with pertinent
information about our program. Our mission is to provide the most
comprehensive health care for our student athletes and
visitors.
The Certified Athletic Trainer is a highly-educated and skilled
professional specializing in athletic health care. In cooperation
with physicians and other allied health personnel, the certified
athletic trainer functions as an integral member of the athletic
health care team. Certified athletic trainers have fulfilled the
requirements for certification established by the National Athletic
Trainers' Association Board of Certification, Inc. (NATABOC).
Students who want to become certified athletic trainers must earn
a degree from an accredited athletic training curriculum.
Accredited programs include formal instruction in areas such as
injury/illness prevention, first aid and emergency care, assessment
of injury/illness, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic
modalities, and nutrition. Classroom learning is enhanced through
clinical education experiences. More than 70 percent of certified
athletic trainers hold at least a master's degree.
