Men's Volleyball Goes 1-1 at UVC Crossover Tournament, Improve to 6-3 on the Year
BUFFALO, NY – The SUNYIT men's volleyball team finished 1-1 at the United Volleyball Conference Crossover Tournament this past weekend, defeating Hilbert College 3-0 at D'Youville College on Saturday before falling to nationally ranked Medaille College 3-0 at their place on Sunday. The Wildcats are now 1-2 in the UVC and 6-3 overall.
The Wildcats swept Hilbert by the set scores of 25-20, 27-25 and 25-19. Junior Ryan Meller (Eden, NY/Eden Central) led the way with 13 kills, seven digs and seven total blocks, with the block total being tied for the second-most in a match in program history. Freshman Dylan Krowicki (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) had a match-high 15 digs to go along with nine kills, while junior Tim Ross (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) collected 10 digs and senior Jonathan Brochu (Latham, NY/Shaker) had 24 assists.
Adam Weaver had 16 kills and three serve aces and R. J. Sykora had 16 assists for Hilbert.
The Wildcats then gave the No. 9 ranked Medaille College a run for their money, dropping three very close sets by the scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 25-20. Meller finished with nine kills, eight digs, two assists and two blocks, while sophomore Jeff Coon (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) also had nine kills and added three blocks. Krowicki finished with seven kills and five digs and Brochu tallied 25 assists.
Trevor Barnett had 11 kills and four blocks for Medaille, while Erin Kelly had 10 kills and Ryan Maxwell finished with 25 assists.
The Wildcats will be back in action this weekend when they travel to participate in the Endicott College February Mania Tournament. They will begin the tournament with two matches on Saturday, taking on Baruch College at 1:00 pm and Vassar College at 3:00 pm. Sunday's opponents will then be determined by their tournament seeding that will be based on the results from Saturday's action.
