Lady Wildcats Rally to Beat Penn St.-Harrisburg, 73-68

UTICA, NY – The Lady Wildcats (7-2, 1-0 NEAC) overcome a five-point deficit with less than three minutes to play to upend visiting Penn State-Harrisburg (5-6, 3-1 NEAC), 73-68 in regulation. SUNYIT closed the game on a 10-0 run over the last 2:09 to win in their first conference game of the season.

Ultimately, the game came down to free throws: SUNYIT made 8 of them in the course of their 10-0 run to win the game, and was 23 of 26 from the charity stripe for the game. The Nittany Lions, on the other hand, made just 17 of 28.

The Wildcats survived a monster game by Lady Lion leading-scorer Daril Foose. Foose registered 21 points on 7-14 shooting, and used her lanky 5'11" frame to reject five SUNYIT shot attempts.

On the other side of the ball, it was an unfamiliar face at the top of the scoring chart, as Kayla McNeil (Stillwater, N.Y. / Stillwater) led with 19 points. She didn't steal much of the limelight from conference leading scorer Lyndsey Brognano (Rome, N.Y. / Rome Free Academy), as Brognano showcased her versatility with 17 points on just five field goal attempts. In response to a smothering Harrisburg defense, the junior guard from Rome got to the line for a game-high 12 free throw attempts (she made all of them) and dished out a team-high 5 assists.

Of course, the player of the game for SUNYIT might just have been sophomore Abbey Hanehan (Stillwater, N.Y. / Stillwater). The 5'7" guard came off the bench to score 12 points in only 16 minutes, including back-to-back baskets to tie the game at 61 in the second half, and then a layup minutes later to pull the Wildcats to within one, down 67-66.

Neither team shot well from beyond the arc in the game, and while the Lady Lions out shot SUNYIT 43% to 36%, they converted just one more field goal than the Wildcats did on the afternoon.

Penn State-Harrisburg will await a home match with Wells next Saturday, while the Wildcats are back in action less than 24 hours from now in another home contest vs. Gallaudet. Game time is set for 2:00 pm at the Campus Center Gymnasium.
